Immigration Update: Reported U.S. Visa Processing Freeze Affecting Certain Countries
Versfeld & Hugo, LLC is receiving increased inquiries regarding reports of a temporary suspension of U.S. immigrant visa processing for nationals of approximately 75 countries.
Based on current reporting, this pause is expected to primarily affect immigrant visa categories processed at U.S. embassies and consulates abroad, including:
- Family-based immigrant visas
- Employment-based immigrant visas
- Diversity visa (DV lottery) processing
At this time, reports indicate that nonimmigrant visas—such as B-1/B-2 (visitor), F-1 (student), J-1, O, P, and other temporary work visas—are not included in the suspension.
Who may be impacted
- Individuals outside the U.S. awaiting or preparing for immigrant visa interviews
- Applicants whose cases are pending consular processing or administrative review
Who is generally not impacted
- Individuals already inside the U.S. filing extensions or changes of status
- Lawful permanent residents
- Holders of valid, unexpired visas
- Applicants for most nonimmigrant visa categories
Importantly, a “visa freeze” does not mean visas are cancelled, immigration pathways are eliminated, or that all nationalities are affected equally. Implementation and exceptions often vary by country, visa type, and individual circumstances.
